What is the world’s most popular destination? London, of course

We’ve known it all along, but it’s always nice to have independent corroboration … London is the most popular place in the world with tourists.
That’s not us saying it. The No 1 rating has come from the users of travel web site TripAdvisor.
It’s the second time London has been in top spot in the TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice awards. The latest findings follow the year when a certain Royal wedding grabbed the headlines. And, given there is a Royal baby on the way, the city will entertain high hopes of retaining top spot for 2020.
So, eat your heart out Paris (No 2), take a hike Rome (No 3), you’re nowhere to be seen New York (No 13). According to an algorithm which analyses millions of reviews and ratings, the good old capital of England can’t be beaten.
The travel spots completing the World Top 10 (link to www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Trips/86326235) were:
4 Crete
5 Bali
6 Phuket
7 Barcelona
8 Istanbul
9 Marrakech
10 Dubai
The previous year the rankings of London and Paris were reversed. But interest in the British Royal family changed the game. Bookings for a tour of Buckingham Palace and the Changing of the Guard leapt more than 200%.
Other factors included the display of poppies marking the centenary of the end of World War I at the Tower of London.
