Make a hot date with these hot sauces

Know what the Scoville Scale* measures? If you do, there’s a day coming up in Peckham that you need to put in your diary.

Make a note: Copeland Park Peckham 11am-11pm, Saturday 13 April, lose all sensation in mouth – and love it!

It’s a first. The Hot Sauce Society will be holding a festival day in the park showcasing more than 30 hot sauces. There will be plenty of food and drink available, but we recommend you take a secret supply of dairy – whole milk, full-fat sour cream or yogurt should do the trick – to take some of the fire out of the chilli situation.

Of course, you don’t have to try the hottest sauce, but it seems to make little sense to whimp out totally.

The day is sponsored by the American brand Frank’s RedHot Sauce which celebrates its centenary next year. Frank’s will be the sauce featured on the signature Lord of the Wings dish (pictured).

Entrance is free and, in addition to sampling all those hot sauces, there will be music from DJs and the opportunity to sip some craft beers.

*It’s a way of measuring the heat/spiciness in a chilli.
